This ancient mariner's map which dates back to around the 1st century CE gives us a peek into the great ports that played a pivotal role in the Indian Ocean Trade Network. During the time of the Roman Empire, this was a vibrant trade route and there was a steady flow of ships into ports in India, especially along the West coast. The Romans couldn't get enough of Indian luxuries like fine cottons, spices and ivory!

Some of the prominent Indian ports that find mention in this Periplus include Muziris, believed to be around present day Pattanam in Kerala; Barygaza, present day Bharuch in Gujarat and Suppara (Uppara), present day Nala Sopara near Mumbai. You will also find mention of Palibothra, the great city of Pataliputra i.e. modern day Patna, on this map.
