It fuses glass powder onto the bright copper surface which not only adds rich colour, but also prevents it from oxidizing so that you can cherish this for many more years. This technique, known as enamelling, is a near extinct craft, wherein the glass powder is laid onto the copper surface in the requisite patterns and the assembly is heated to 800°C, at which point the powdered glass melts to form a coat on the copper surface.
